CONNECTING CLIMATE ACTION TO HOUSEHOLD SAVINGS

With a priority to reach historically marginalized communities, MUSE led community and stakeholder engagement for the City of Chicago’s 2022 Climate Action Plan. Community conversations were framed around economic benefits of climate action, asking participants to prioritize potential strategies according to how they would positively impact household budgets.

PUTTING IT INTO PLAIN LANGUAGE, NO MATTER THE LANGUAGE

An important aspect of MUSE’s role was to translate technical concepts from jargon into something more conversational. Using relatable examples of how potential strategies might impact residents’ lives, the urgency of reducing the City’s carbon footprint was brought into focus.

Furthermore, we developed materials in five languages to ensure a breadth of accessibility across Chicago’s communities: Arabic, Chinese, English, Polish, and Spanish.

COMMUNITY-LED CONVERSATIONS

MUSE developed a facilitation kit and collaborated with community partner organizations to host Funding Your Future “mini meetings.” Facilitation kits included a script for the host, activity worksheets, and a feedback reporting sheet. We hosted a virtual training and a series of office hours to ensure community partners’ success.

SHOWING OUR WORK

The final plan document, developed by WSP and City of Chicago, included information on how community feedback was incorporated into final recommendations. With a table that outlines changes between the draft and final documents and the comments that informed them, community members can see how their participation influenced outcomes.
